The Trophy Fish of the Pacific.
On Your Line.

Aloha, and welcome to Blue Marlin fishing in Kauai aboard the Emma Nalani, our 41-foot Bertram six-pack sport fishing yacht running daily out of Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor. Pacific Blue Marlin is the largest billfish species in the world and the undisputed trophy of sport fishing in Hawaii — these are the fish that serious anglers fly across the Pacific to catch. Kauai's deep water puts you on the ledges where they live, because a quarter mile off our dock the ocean floor drops a thousand feet, and another three thousand feet a mile out. That is exactly Blue Marlin country, and that is where the Emma Nalani fishes every day.

This page covers both Pacific Blue Marlin and Striped Marlin fishing in Kauai, because both billfish species run off our coast, often on the same ledges, and both are fished with similar tactics. When a marlin of either species hits the spread behind the Emma Nalani, you will know it instantly.

  • Pacific Blue Marlin (Makaira nigricans) is the largest billfish species in the world
  • Average Kauai-caught Blues run 150 to 400 lbs, with 500+ lb fish not uncommon during peak season
  • The IGFA all-tackle world record stands at 1,376 lbs, caught off Kona, Hawaii, in 1982
  • A "Grander" — a Pacific Blue over 1,000 lbs — is the ultimate bucket-list fish, and Hawaiian waters have produced more Granders than anywhere else on Earth
  • Blues are known for explosive strikes, aerial jumps, and punishing battles that can last an hour or more
1,376 lbs world record
A Grander — a Pacific Blue over 1,000 lbs — is the ultimate billfish trophy, and Hawaiian waters have produced more Granders than anywhere on Earth. The Emma Nalani fishes that water every single day, and every trip that runs offshore is a trip into Grander territory.

When and Where to Catch
Marlin in Kauai

Blue Marlin fishing in Kauai produces year-round, but peak months fall between May and October when warm-water currents push Blues closer to the islands and bait is most abundant. Striped Marlin run differently — they show up more commonly in the cooler months, with winter and early spring delivering the strongest Striped Marlin action off Kauai. A well-timed trip can put you on both species.

The 1,000-Fathom Drop-Off

Both species patrol the offshore ledge where shallow Hawaiian shelf meets the deep blue. From Nawiliwili, we're on that structure fast — which is one of the reasons Kauai fishes so well for billfish.

🌊
Current Lines & Temperature Breaks

Marlin hunt along oceanic edges where warm and cool water meet and bait concentrates. The captain reads the water and runs to the edges — it's experience, not luck.

⏱️
Trip Length Matters

A full-day fishing charter or custom 10 to 12-hour trip gives you the range and hours to realistically hunt trophy marlin. More time means more water covered and more chances at a fish of a lifetime.

Full-Day Is the Floor for Trophy Blues

Pacific Blue Marlin require range — you need to run offshore to the deep structure and spend real hours working the ledges. The full-day gives you that minimum. For trophy-class fish or Granders, a custom 10 to 12-hour charter is what serious marlin anglers book. Striped Marlin can be picked up on shorter trips in winter and spring — but if Pacific Blues are the goal, give the captain the hours to hunt properly.

🎣
Heavy-Tackle Trolling Rods & Reels

Penn International Gold 2-speed reels · 80–130 lb line · purpose-built for the long battle

🦑
Large Skirted Lures (14–16 Inch)

Push water and mimic Ahi, Mahi, or squid — big profile, big splash, irresistible to a feeding Blue

🐟
Rigged Ballyhoo & Live Bait

Live Aku (skipjack tuna) for targeting larger Blues — the most natural and effective presentation for trophy-class fish

🪑
Big-Game Fighting Chair

The Emma Nalani's purpose-built fighting chair — essential for hour-long battles with fish that can push 500 lbs

How We Fish for Blue Marlin
on the Emma Nalani

Marlin fishing on the Emma Nalani is big-game sport fishing in its purest form — heavy tackle, large lures or live bait, and long hours of trolling the deep water while waiting for one of the Pacific's most powerful predators to hit the spread. When a marlin finally strikes, the rod bends to the butt, the reel screams, and everyone on the boat suddenly has a job to do.

Blue Marlin fights are legendary. The fish often makes a series of blistering runs combined with aerial jumps early in the battle before settling into a deep-water slug match that can take 30 minutes to well over an hour depending on size. Striped Marlin fights are typically shorter but more acrobatic — multiple jumps are standard.

  • Heavy-tackle trolling rods with Penn International Gold 2-speed reels, rigged with 80 to 130 lb line
  • Large skirted lures (14 to 16 inches) that push water and mimic Ahi, Mahi, or squid
  • Rigged ballyhoo and live bait — often live Aku (skipjack tuna) for targeting larger Blues
  • Outriggers and teasers to spread a wide pattern and attract fish to the boat
  • Big-game fighting chair for the long, punishing battle that only big marlin can deliver

Kauai crews often tag and release marlin to support the fishery — a long-standing Hawaiian practice for these apex billfish. Learn more about the rest of what we catch, or call Gina to plan your marlin trip around current conditions.
